The Statement of David Barton, Bailiff
I'll never forget the events of yesterday; it was the spookiest thing that has ever happened to me. It started as a normal days work up until we came to the visit on Cosgrove lane; I now remember what I didn't notice at the time. There was this strange feeling about the street, there was this feeling of lifelessness, a feeling of otherworldliness, no birds were singing, no people were on the street. The only living creature we I was a black cat, following the van down the street. At the time I did not think this strange but come to think of it now we were approaching mid afternoon, and there should have been some activity on the street, even if it was some old dear going shopping. Anyway me, Spud; that's Roger McDonald and Henry Morris affectionately known as Coleslaw, were heading down the street to this house we had to visit, we had been there three or four times in the past. We drove just passed the ally way at the side of No. 36 and stopped, all seamed normal at the time, but looking back it just did not feel right.
Anyway Spud and I got out of the van while Coleslaw started to fill out the necessary forms, I remember looking around to see if there was anybody on the street, the only living thing I saw was that black cat which followed us, sat near the entrance to the ally way watching us like it knew who we were and what fate was going to come to us! Spud knocked hard on the Door and we waited to see if the Occupants answered, after about 30 seconds I knocked again. We waited for about 1 minute this time, there seamed to be no sign of life in the front of the house so Spud and me walked down the ally way to the back gate. The gate was jammed half open; a large box of abandoned rubbish was on the path just through the gate, I looked around the garden and remember thinking 'This garden need a lot of work to get it right'. We then proceeded to enter the garden and walked down to the rear door. The Dustbin was parked in the middle of this narrow section of yard, an old rabbit hutch was opposite the door and it looked like it had not been used in years. As we approached the back door we could see through the rear window, as there was no curtain hanging at this time, I peered in to the room and noticed it was devoid of people, the TV seamed to be on playing to itself? I also noticed that on one of the walls there were some cards they looked like Christmas cards from this angle, I remember thinking 'That's odd it's the end of February'. Also I remember there was some markings on the wall opposite the window, I thought nothing of them at the time, now I can clearly remember A Circle with a five pointed star inside it and a picture of an eye within that. We then pressed on, I knocked on the rear door to try and rouse the occupants again and I then noticed the black cat sat by the gate because Spud was trying to scratch it behind the ears. The cat looked at him, then at me it then turned and ran out of the gate, Spud followed a for few feet, I heard the cat's bell tinkle as it ran down the ally way back to the front of the house. I turned back to the door and peered through the Kitchen window next to the door, the gas cooker had all four rings turned on, but there were no pans near or on the cooker, again I thought 'That's odd'
I then headed back out of the gate and followed Spud back to the front of the house, where he was watching the cat run up the street, and turn the corner into the town. Coleslaw by now was out of the van with clipboard in his hand, he was filling in report forms for the boss. This time Coleslaw and me headed towards the door and I knocked again this time a little harder than before, this time the door rattled quite violently. Spud Pulled out a cigarette and shouted 'Ere Barbie you got a light', they call me Barbie because I used to be a Barber. I then tossed my lighter over to Spud and he lit up his cig. Coleslaw and me waited for a few minutes before he tried to pick the lock on the door, this is standard procedure on the 4th visit we obtained our documents so we could enter the property. Anyway Coleslaw started to work on the lock, it normally takes him about thirty seconds to pick most locks but he seamed to be working on this one for a few minutes. Then he jumped back and stared at the lock for a few seconds while muttering, 'the lock ate my pick, there was teeth I'm sure of it, but there couldn't have been. It must have just dropped to the floor. I need to get more sleep these days or my mind will be the death of me.' Coleslaw stepped closer, stared at it, and said 'We may as well batter it down boys this locks broken my pick so were screwed as far as that goes.' Spud then walked to the back of the van and pulled out the Portable ram so we could take the door off its hinges.
Spud arrived at the door, ram in hand. Coleslaw stepped back and stood by the van, put his head back and let out a deep breath, while me and spud got the ram ready. Spud was on the left and I was on the right of the door, we did a few practice swings before spud began to count. Then he began 'One... Two... Three... Now...' We then swung the Ram as hard as we could in to the door, now this is where things start to get a little weird, The ram hit the door and there was a small tearing sound, like a knife through paper, the ram then vanished through the door and both me and Spud who were expecting it to put up some resistance so we let go of the ram as it went through the door otherwise we would have stumbled and injured ourselves. We both examined the hole; the edges were flapping in the breeze like paper and out of the black hole came a strange greenie blue mist. After a few minutes both spud and me nodded to each other and I said 'Lets get it open.' So Spud went to the van and took out the Chainsaw, he revved it up while walking back to the door, at this point Coleslaw said 'I'm just going for a stroll to wake myself up a little' He then began to walk up the street. Spud came up to the door and I stepped back, he revved up the chainsaw to warm it up and he began to cut a large hole in the door so we could get through. When he finished the piece off door fell inwards to reveal darkness and this strange mist floating out of the room. Now I look back I could not see any features in the room just blackness, I did not think at the time to look through the window, but I am glad I didn't.
After the door fell in Spud put the chainsaw in neutral and set it on the floor in front of me, I'll never forget the next bit for as long as I live. Then spud looked up at me smiled and said 'Were in', he then turned to the door, reached forward to steady himself on the doorframe so he could walk through. As I remember it I saw a large black elongated hand reach out through the hole in the door and grab Spuds arm, and it yanked him through, I then heard a spine chilling scream Silenced shortly afterwards by the crunching of what I can presume were his bones, this I knew was the end of Spud. All I could think of was that hand; the fingers were black and shiny, they must have been about a foot in length. I stared for a few seconds more, then I looked up and down the street for Coleslaw, he was gone. So I turned and ran the way the cat had gone, I headed toward town to find a phone and call the police.
I ran past the School, across the road, through the Walk through, and towards to Post Office. When I reached the phone box I stopped to catch my breath, all the while thinking of that hand, the black elongated fingers, my mind started to wander and tried to imagine the horrors attached to it. I gathered my senses and rang the police. After speaking with the operator at great length they said 'The police are on their way', this I took to mean they would be here in about 30 minutes, as the usual response times round here are nothing to be desired. So I pulled myself together the best I could and began to walk back to the house. All the time the Image of the hand and its owner was flicking through my imagination, and the thoughts of the hideous creature on the other end plagued me.
As I approached the school I saw at the end of the street two police cars blocking the road, I thought 'This is not right'. I continued walking until I came parallel with the school building, so I could see what was happening. By this time the greenie blue smoke had spread across the street and covered most of the house, I could make out vague movement from within the smoke. Then I ventured forward trying to get a better view I reached the school drive, then their was shooting and screaming coming from within the cloud of smoke. I tried to run forward but my legs would not respond I was frozen to the spot. A few seconds later I heard what I thought at the time was my shirt catching on the fence the ripping sound was loud and looking back it must have come from the area of house. It sounded just like fabric tearing, but now I can see it was not, it must have been something in the house. Anyway after this sudden sound I saw or I think I saw the head of one of the police officers come hurtling from the smoke it bounced across the schoolyard. Then I noticed for the first time since this whole incident started a wind had picked up, it was heading towards the house, it seamed to have a life all of it's own. The smoke seamed to slowly move back in to the house and I'm sure I could hear children whispering. Again I tried to run for my life, this time my legs worked and I ran back towards the town, hoping to find help.
The last thing I remember other than waking up in hospital, was passing the old Vicarage on my way in to town. Now all I can think of is that hand, black, cold and distorted as well as the fate of Spud... he must be dead. As for Coleslaw I can only presume he got his arse out of there and went home to rest. Maybe he saw something in that lock, and had the right idea, I guess I will find out soon enough...
